Testing Capabilities and Services

Testing Capabilities and Services

Battery testing is a critical process that ensures the reliability, safety, and performance of batteries used in various applications, from consumer electronics to electric vehicles. As the demand for energy storage solutions grows, the need for rigorous testing becomes increasingly important.

Proper testing identifies potential issues such as capacity degradation, thermal runaway, and service life, helping manufacturers optimise designs and maintain quality standards. Furthermore, testing can assist with assessment of products under differing environmental conditions, under varied or specific usage parameters, obsolescence planning, or to assist in fault diagnosis.

In an era where energy efficiency and sustainability are increasingly prioritised, effective battery testing plays a vital role in advancing technology and fostering consumer trust.

Master Instruments has invested heavily into the latest precision testing equipment, from world renowned specialists such as Arbin & Cadex, to provide a wide range of testing services to Australian industry. At Master Instruments, our engineers utilise a number of different test procedures to ascertain battery performance & suitability for different applications, failure analysis & obsolescence planning, plus isolating short comings to allow us to provide our customers with the best options for their price, performance and total cost of ownership parameters.

Our Engineering team is on hand to discuss how our testing services can assist with your product development, assessment & evaluation or performance evaluation.

Recent Investment into world class Arbin testing systems have bolstered our dedicated testing labs in Sydney and Perth facilities. Adding to our fleet of battery testers from Cadex, West Mountain Radio and Vencon, the Arbin machines provide depth & scale to our testing services with a wider array of functions and capabilities.

What types of tests are available?

The testing capabilities are almost limitless and we can custom program test parameters to your exact requirements to achieve accurate and reliable outcomes & results.

Battery / Cell Life Cycle Testing

Provide estimates to ascertain when product usable life will cease
Used in portable battery research to predict the degradation and lifespan of the battery packs under different usage conditions

  Internal Resistance Testing

Tests internal resistance to assist battery end-of-life
Used in energy storage systems (ESS) for renewable energy to ensure that the batteries maintain efficiency over long-term usage

  Real-World Simulations

Simulates defined conditions to test battery performance
Simulates real power conditions for electric devices to assess how the battery will perform in daily usage

  Capacity Testing

Ascertains battery capacity at defined currents
Used in consumer electronics like smartphones or laptops to determine how long the device will run on a full charge

  Charge Pulse Test

Assesses battery performance under pulse loads
Applied in power tools to simulate the high power demand from short, intense bursts of energy usage.

  Charge / Discharge Profiles

Simulates differing/dynamic load profiles
Used in grid-level energy storage systems to simulate dynamic energy demand patterns and ensure stable operation under varying loads.

  Safety Testing (Overcharge/Overdischarge)

Assesses the behaviour of batteries under overcharging/discharging conditions
Used in electric vehicle battery testing to ensure compliance with safety regulations and avoid hazardous situations like thermal runaway

DCIR (Direct Current Internal Resistance) Testing

Measures the internal resistance under varying currents
Applied in grid-tied energy storage systems to ensure batteries can handle peak loads and prevent efficiency losses due to high resistance

Test results and assessment reports are provided, referencing your desired parameters and evaluation criteria.

Testing your own batteries

To supplement our own internal battery testing services, we also supply battery testing equipment to industry for self assessment in many areas.

For example, battery fleet management where self assessing batteries for say portable data scanners, or medical equipment, can identify premature performance issues to avoid failures in the field, which can seriously affect productivity or cause unexpected down-time.
